Vecchia Osteria Seseglio was originally a farmstead in the agricultural area of Seseglio, on the border with Italy. It is difficult to say exactly when it was built, but there are three fireplaces in the Vecchia Osteria, of which one is dated 1861 and one 1868. It is thought that there were originally two properties, one used as a hostelry, and later turned into a restaurant, and another next door with a stable, farmyard and typical rural buildings of the times. Both properties have recently been renovated with total respect for the original materials and design.
Tales have been handed down about the Vecchia Osteria owned by Erminio Fontana, which had immediately become popular and delighted the palates of many. During the week it was a meeting place for customs men, smugglers, railwaymen and postmen, while families would come on foot from Chiasso and Mendrisio for traditional Sunday lunch and to enjoy Erminio’s risotto. He served his saffron rice with chicken livers cooked in red wine and creamed with Parmesan and Emmental cheese, combining the Italian spirit of our roots with the current times in this dish. As witnessed by the signed photo still on display in the restuarant, Erminio even delighted the palate of General H. Guisan with his dishes.
The rest is recent history – memories of the Vecchia Osteria Seseglio reflect a slice of simple life in Mendrisiotto in this beautiful part of Switzerland, with touches of Lombard humour and a Tuscan accent.
